During this period, one can only speak of Jewish and Christian printing houses, as printing was not used for Muslim literature. The aim is to examine printed books from the Ottoman area of the early modern period and to compare the forms and content of book production of different religious groups. The planned detailed analysis of the first printed Cyrillic books in the Ottoman Empire provides a basis for researching the transmission of the Byzantine heritage in post-Byzantine times.

Specifically, the project examines the role of printed books in the dissemination of “Byzantine knowledge” within the Ottoman Empire and beyond in the Slavic world, whereby “Byzantine knowledge” is understood to mean both knowledge produced or handed down in Byzantium, for example in the field of Theology/Philosophy or the arts, as well as knowledge about Byzantium, for example in historiography or Ecclesiastical History. In this context, the project also investigates the development of post-Byzantine networks of Orthodox Christians that extended far beyond the Ottoman borders, as far as Poland-Lithuania and the Muscovite Empire, and through which this knowledge was disseminated. Moldavia-Wallachia played a particularly important role in the transfer of knowledge between the Ottoman and Eastern Europe – a region that developed into the center of Slavic, Greek and Romanian printing.

Head of the Post-Doc project: Prof. Johannes Pahlitzsch (Mainz)Grant

DFG SPP Transottomanica: East European-Ottoman-Persian Mobility DynamicsSupport

DFG SPP Transottomanica: East European-Ottoman-Persian Mobility Dynamics

<jgu-base-button style="display: flex; flex-wrap: wrap; column-gap: 30px; max-width: 100%; flex-direction: row; justify-content: left">

<jgu-base-buttonitem react-props="{
    "text": "To the project website ",
    "icon": "external-link-alt-solid",
    "link": {
        "url": "https://www.byzanz-mainz.de/forschung/projektdetails/zu-den-anfaengen-des-buchdrucks-im-osmanischen-reich-die-rolle-der-gedruckten-buecher-bei-der-vermittlung-des-byzantinischen-und-post-byzantinischen-erbes",
        "linkTarget": "",
        "rel": "",
        "id": "https://www.byzanz-mainz.de/forschung/projektdetails/zu-den-anfaengen-des-buchdrucks-im-osmanischen-reich-die-rolle-der-gedruckten-buecher-bei-der-vermittlung-des-byzantinischen-und-post-byzantinischen-erbes",
        "title": "https://www.byzanz-mainz.de/forschung/projektdetails/zu-den-anfaengen-des-buchdrucks-im-osmanischen-reich-die-rolle-der-gedruckten-buecher-bei-der-vermittlung-des-byzantinischen-und-post-byzantinischen-erbes",
        "type": "link",
        "opensInNewTab": true
    },
    "align": "left",
    "styling": "primary",
    "type": "default",
    "iconBefore": false,
    "isSmall": false,
    "fullWidth": false,
    "className": ""
}"></jgu-base-buttonitem>

</jgu-base-button>

</jgu-base-section>

From 2006 to 2011, program of study in History at the chair for Slavic History at the Lomonossow-Universität, Moscow (graduated with Diplom); Winter semester 2010/2011 research stay at the University of Zagreb (Croatia) as part of an exchange program.

Specifically, the project examines the role of printed books in the dissemination of "Byzantine knowledge" within the Ottoman Empire and beyond in the Slavic world, whereby "Byzantine knowledge" is understood to mean both knowledge produced or handed down in Byzantium, for example in the field of Theology/Philosophy or the arts, as well as knowledge about Byzantium, for example in historiography or Ecclesiastical History.
