Inhalt

The reign of the emperor Justinian (527-565) was a remarkable turning point in the history of the Byzantine empire, a period characterised on one hand by far-reaching legislative, administrative and political reforms and epic military triumphs across vast areas of the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Near East, and on the other by court intrigue and scandal; religious, cultural and political division and dissent; and urban riots and violent reprisals.

This course will introduce students to the rich historical sources for this momentous period. These include contemporary histories of political and military affairs, most prominently those by Procopius, and legislative documents and propagandistic tracts which cast light on the workings of the eastern Roman state under Justinian and his political ideology. Bishops’ letters and the minutes of church councils and synods, meanwhile, provide an insight into the impact of bitter theological disputes on the Christian Church. While the course will mostly be devoted to written sources, it will also introduce students to artistic and archaeological evidence from the period, and how this can be combined with textual sources to enrich our understanding of ideological trends and economic developments.
