The Iconoclastic controversy, a debate over the role of images in Christian worship, was a significant phenomenon in Byzantine history, whose resonance lasted long after the victory of the Iconodules and profoundly shaped later Byzantine and Orthodox identity. Nor was the debate on icons limited to the territories ruled by the Byzantine emperor, but it was very much an international affair, in which both the Carolingian world and the Christians living under Muslim rule also participated. Despite the importance of what we today call Iconoclasm, the actual agenda and beliefs of the adherents of the Iconoclastic movement are difficult to assess, since almost everything we know about them comes from their opponents, the Iconodules. Nonetheless, in the last decade scholars, in particular Byzantinists, have radically reinterpreted Iconoclasm. In this course we will evaluate both contemporaneous texts in translation as well as recent scholarly interpretations.Zusätzliche Informationen
